The Gustavus women’s soccer team last Saturday shut out St. Olaf College 1-0, marking the first win over St. Olaf since 2008 and the first time since 2002 the Black and Gold started MIAC play 2-0.

The Gusties put up the game’s only goal 7:53 into the match. Maddison Ackiss scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season on an assist from Sophie Leininger. The goal proved to be the game-winner – Ackiss’ second of week – as neither team could find the back of the net in the remaining 82 minutes.

St. Olaf tallied 12 shots, while the Gusties posted nine.

Keeper Ashley Becker made three saves in her second-straight shutout win.

The University of Wisconsin-River Falls women’s soccer team lost a conference match to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire by a score of 3-2 last Saturday.

The first half of the match was a busy one for goalkeeper Erica Cimochowski, as she was credited with four saves. The Blugolds outshot the Falcons 10-5 in the first half. Three of those first half shots found the back of the net.

The Falcons started to regain momentum at the end of the first half when sophomore midfielder Abby Soderholm found the back of the net at 41:21. The goal was unassisted.

Once the second half started, UWRF picked up right where it left off. The Falcons peppered the UWEC goalkeeper, and at 65:33 freshman Maggie Koehler found the back of the net to cut the Blugold lead to 3-2. Senior midfielder Megan Haninger assisted Koehler’s goal.

Koehler’s goal would be the final score for either team, as the Falcons could not muster up another goal to tie the game.

Both teams played aggressively throughout the game, but UWEC played a little too aggressively. The Blugolds were charged with 16 fouls and three yellow cards and the Falcons only had six fouls and no yellow cards.

Cimochowski took the loss for the Falcons giving up three goals in the first half. She finished the afternoon with four saves, with all of them coming in the first half.  Koehler, sophomore Carrie Anderson, and junior Nina Abrahamson were all credited with two shots apiece.
