Softball Splits With Carleton

The Gustavus softball team split with Carleton College on Thursday in Northfield, Minnesota. The Gusties dropped the first game 3-9, but won the second game 5-0. Ingrid Olson went three-for-four in game two with a three-run home run in the second inning.

The Gustavus softball team split with Carleton College on Thursday in Northfield, Minnesota. The Gusties improve to 18-14 overall and 12-6 in the MIAC, while the Knights improve to 11-21 overall and 7-11 in the MIAC.

In game one, the Gusties jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Molly Biehn doubled to to left-center field to score Audrey Lenoch from first base. Vickie Gunderson responded for the Knights with a single to right field to score Alyssa Honnette to tie the game at one run each after one inning of play.

Gunderson brought in another run for the Knights in the second inning and scored on Amanda Espinosa’s single down the right-field line. Gunderson added a triple in the fourth inning to bring in two more runs to make the score 5-1 in favor of Carleton. Molly Biehn scored in the fifth inning and Ingrid Olson scored in the sixth inning to pull within two runs of the Knights. Carleton scored four more runs in the bottom to of the sixth to make the final 9-3 in favor of the Knights. Molly Biehn, who scattered 13 hits and struck out three batters, recorded the loss on the mound for Gustavus.

In game two, the Gusties shut-out the Knights. Sara Medved allowed one hit and struck out three batters in six innings of work on the mound for Gustavus. Medved recorded her eighth win of the season. Ingrid Olson went three-for-four, scored three times and knocked in three runs for the Gusties in game two.

The Gusties put four runs on the board in the first two innings of the second game. Ingrid Olson led off with a single to center field and swiped her 12th stolen base of the year to move into scoring position. Abby Bernstein layed down a bunt to advance Olson to third. Bernstein reached first base on an error by the catcher and Olson came home to make it 1-0 in favor of the Gusties.

Olson cleared the bases with a three-run home run in the second inning to put the Gusties up 4-0. Olson swiped her second stolen base of the game and her 13th of the year in the seventh inning and would score of an Audrey Lenoch single to make the final 5-0 in favor of Gustavus.
