SAINT PETER, MINN. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s tennis team kept its momentum flowing in the right direction on Saturday when it picked up two non-conference victories against the College of St. Scholastica and Minnesota State University, Mankato at the Swanson Tennis Center. The Gusties defeated the both the Saints and Mavericks 8-1 to move their overall record to 7-9 on the season.
Gustavus began its day with a near sweep of St. Scholastica. The Gusties dropped only six total games in all three of their doubles matches, and won in straight sets in five of their six singles matches. First-year Taylor Shortly (Lindstrom, Minn.) suffered Gustavus’s lone loss, but fought from down a set to force a third set tiebreaker against the Saints’ Sarah Coryell. There, Shortly held a 7-6 lead but couldn’t hold on in the marathon 10-pointer, eventually falling 10-8.
In its match with Division II Minnesota State, Gustavus took an early 2-1 lead following doubles and swept each of the six singles matches to earn its second victory of the day. Lizzy Stanczyk (Jr., Plymouth, Wis.) and Katie Aney (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) were each pushed to tiebreakers in their first sets at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, but Stanczyk won her second set 6-4 and Aney’s opponent was forced to default due to illness.
Gustavus will be back in action on April 3 and 4 when it will travel to Madison, Wisconsin for the Midwest Invitational.
