The Gustavus women’s track and field team headed to nearby Mankato, Minn., to take on mostly Division II foes at the Ted Nelson Classic, and thrower Elizabeth Weiers certainly rose to the occasion. The Gustie senior won the weight throw with a distance that tied a school indoor record, and ranks among the best in the MIAC and Division III this season. For her performance, the MIAC sports information directors honored Weiers Wednesday with the MIAC Women’s Indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Week award.

Weiers’ winning toss in the weight throw traveled 53-6.25 feet, or 16.31 meters and tied the Gustavus indoor school record, which was originally set by Diana Scott in 2009. Her winning distance also ranks No. 1 in the MIAC this season by nearly three inches, and it’s the 16th-best throw in Division III in 2015. In the meet, Gustavus and Weiers competed against Division II MSU-Mankato, Augustana, St. Cloud State and Sioux Falls and Division II UW-La Crosse and Simpson.

This weekend, the Gusties will get into the Valentine’s Day spirit by competing at Carleton College’s “Meet of the Hearts.” The meet will take place Saturday, Feb. 14, in Northfield, Minn., at 11 a.m. The following Saturday (Feb. 21), Weiers and company will head to Collegeville, Minn., for the Saint John’s Quadrangular meet.
