Baseball Sweeps St. Mary’s 15-5 and 17-9

The Gustavus baseball team pushed its win streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s on Wednesday afternoon. The Gusties scored 32 runs in the two games (15-5, 17-9) and pounded out 37 hits including 14 doubles and four home runs.

The Gustavus baseball team pushed its win streak to five games with a doubleheader sweep of St. Mary’s in St. Peter on Wednesday afternoon. The Gusties scored 32 runs in the two games (15-5, 17-9) and pounded out 37 hits including 14 doubles and four home runs. The wind was blowing ferociously throughout the day which did help the ball carry significantly. The two teams combined to hit 19 doubles (14 for Gustavus and 5 for St. Mary’s) and eight home runs (four Gustavus and four St. Mary’s) in the two games.

In game one, Gustavus scored four runs in the fourth inning and seven runs in the fifth inning to open up a 15-2 lead. Tony Konicek and Ben Sherer drove in two runs each with timely doubles in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Gustavus pounded out 10 hits including two singles each by Tyler Vrieze and Andy Schmidt and another double by Ben Scherer. Konicek ended the game with three hits in four at-bats with three RBI, while Scherer went three-for-five at the plate with three RBI. Jake Hauck picked up the win for Gustavus on the mound. He threw all seven innings allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.

In game two, the Gusties trailed 5-4 in the fourh inning when Trent Larson hit a two-run home run to give Coach Mike Carroll and his squad the lead for good at 6-5. The Gusties would go on to record another seven-run fifth inning and close the game out with a four-run sixth. Tony Konicek hit a three-run home run to key the seven-run fifh inning and Trent Larson hit another two-run home run to spark the four-run sixth inning. Larson had a big day with two hits in five at-bats with five runs scored and four RBI. Bryant Rogness was three-for-five with three RBI, Ben Scherer was three-for-five with four RBI and Ash Larsen was two-for-four with three RBI. Matt Musta, Josh Spitzack and Andy Schmidt all pitched for the Gusties. Musta, who started and allowed five runs in three innings of work, recorded the win.

A large group of Gusties had big numbers in the doubleheader including Bryant Rogness (5-for-8, 6 runs scored, 4 RBI), Trent Larson (3-for-7, 7 runs scored, 6 RBI), Tony Konicek (6-for-9, 5 runs scored, 3 RBI), Ben Scherer (six-for-10, three runs scored, 7 RBI), Ash Larsen (4-for-8, 2 runs scored, four RBI), and Tyler Vrieze (6-for-8, 4 runs scored, 2 RBI).

Coach Mike Carroll’s squad has been on-fire this past week posting a record of 5-1 and outscoring its opponents 67-31.
