Women’s Soccer Downed By Carnegie Mellon In Season Opener

Gettysburg, Penn. – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s soccer team was defeated 8-0 at the hands of Carnegie Mellon University on Friday afternoon at Gettysburg College’s Clark Field.  Gustavus is now 0-1-0 overall while Carnegie Mellon jumps to 1-0-0.

After finding themselves in a 7-0 hole to start the second half, Gustavus tightened its defense and only gave up one goal over the final 45 minutes. However, Carnegie Mellon’s offense was too much for the Gusties as the Tartens outshot Gustavus 18-0 in the second half and 32-1 over the course of the game. Heather Goff (Sr., Eagan, Minn.) took the Gustavus’s lone shot in the game at the 12:11 mark in the first half.

Gustie goalkeeper Roisen Granlund (So., St. Paul, Minn.) suffered the loss after giving up seven goals and making three saves in 45 minutes.  Granlund gave way to senior Caroline Olson (Sr., York, Penn.) who took over to begin the second half. Olson allowed one goal and came up with five saves in her 45 minutes between the posts.

Carnegie Mellon was led by first year forward Sienna Stritter and senior forward Sevina Reid. Stritter and Reid compiled two goals apiece for the Tartans.

Gustavus will take the pitch again tomorrow afternoon when they take on host school Gettysburg College at 3 p.m. CST. After posting a 12-2-4 overall record in 2013, Gettysburg will open its season this evening when they compete against William Smith in the second of two games played on Clark Field today.
