Softball Set For Pivotal MIAC Series With MIAC Leader St. Thomas Saturday

St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus softball team is set for a pivotal series in the race for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) title race this weekend when it hosts the conference-leading University of St. Thomas on Saturday at the Gustie Softball Field.  The Gusties enter the weekend with a record of 14-9 overall and 7-1 in the MIAC, while the Tommies come in with a mark of 21-5 on the year and 9-1 in league play.  Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for game one to start at 1:00 p.m., with the second game to follow.

Gustavus is most recently coming off a sweep over Carleton on Wednesday in Northfield, Minn.  Tied 3-3 headed to the seventh in game one, the Gusties scored three runs in the top of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Jaden Fischer and a two-run single from Hannah Heacox.  The Knights could only manage one run in the bottom half of the final frame to bring the final score to 6-4 in favor of the Gusties.  Gustavus followed with a 2-0 win in game two.  Heacox was lights out on the rubber, picking up her first shutout of the season.

St. Thomas also last played on Wednesday, sweeping Macalester in St. Paul.  The Tommies scored four runs in the bottom of the third and two more in the sixth on their way to a 6-1 win in game one.  St. Thomas needed only six innings to decide the fate of game two.  Leading 5-0, the Tommie women scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to stamp the game final with a score of 8-0 due to the mercy rule.
