St. Paul – The Gustavus Adolphus women’s indoor track and field team took part in its final tune-up competition before the upcoming MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Pre-MIAC Meet held Friday at the Leonard Center on the campus of Macalester College. The Gusties totaled 84 points to finish third out of six teams at the meet. Macalester took first with a score of 141, while Hamline rounded out the top three in third with a score of 123.
Gustavus was led by a strong showing in the field events where four individuals tallied five top three finishes. Nevada Wendlandt (Sr., Maplewood, Minn.) led the group with a first place finish and another second place mark. Wendlandt won the pole vault competition with a height of 11-feet 2.25-inches and finished runner-up in the high jump after clearing 5-feet 1.75-inches. Kelsey Harms (So., Apple Valley, Minn.) came in third in the pole vault after going over the bar at 10-feet 0.5-inches
Sarah Swanson (So., Fairbanks, Alaska) provided Gustavus its second win of the meet by taking first in the shot put after recording a throw of 45-feet 2.25-inches. Elizabeth Weiers (Jr., Le Center, Minn.) rounded out the top field performers with a third place showing in the weight throw where she carded a toss of 49-feet 4-inches.
The Gusties benefited from three third place runs in the track events. Hayley Kemper (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) took third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.08, Caitlin Fermoyle (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) took third in the mile with a time of 5:17.32, and Emily Sands (Fy., Rochester, Minn.) rounded out the group with a third in the 3,000-meter run in 10:56.95.
Gustavus will be back in action next weekend when it competes in the 2014 MIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The MIAC meet will be held March 6-8, 2014, at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn.
