St. Paul, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s hockey team skated to a 6-0 win over Hamline University on Friday night at Warner Coliseum.  The Gusties scored one goal in the first period, three in the second, and two in the third, led by Emily Reibert (So., Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) and Allison Eder-Zdechlik (So., Stillwater, Minn.), who each scored two goals.  With the win, Gustavus improves to 4-1-1 overall and 3-0-0 in MIAC play, while the Pipers drop to 0-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the MIAC.

Reibert opened the scoring in the first period with her first goal of the season at the 7:58 mark.  Her goal would eventually prove to the game-winner as the Gustie defense went on to shut out the Piper offense.  Reibert was assisted by Emily Gustafson (Fy., Esko, Minn.) and Allie Lewis (Fy., Kearney, Neb.) on the play.

Gustavus enjoyed an 18-4 shot advantage in the opening frame, a margin that would soon become commonplace throughout the contest.  With another 14-4 difference in the second period, the Gusties extended their advantage to 32-8, which would yield three second-period goals.

Senior defender Maddie Bergh (Eden Prairie, Minn.) started the big second period for Gustavus with her second goal of the season at the 6:03 mark.  She was followed by Lewis, who notched her second goal of the season on an assist from Gustafson to put the Gusties in front 3-0 at 13:35.  Reibert finished off the scoring in the period with her second goal of the night on yet another assist from Gustafson.  Reibert’s goal extended the Gustavus lead to 4-0 with 2:51 to play in the period.

The Gustie women held the shot advantage again in the third period.  This time it was a 16-3 tally that gave way to a pair of goals.  Allison Eder-Zdechlik scored both goals in the frame, the first of which came on the power play.  On that first goal, Eder-Zdechlik received assists from Melissa Doyle (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Courtney Boucher (Jr., Hastings, Minn.).  Doyle added another dime on Eder-Zdechlik’s second goal, along with Amanda Cartony (Sr., Stillwater, Minn.).

With her two goals tonight, Eder-Zdechlik now has seven goals on the season, which leads the MIAC.  Emily Gustafson also scored her first collegiate points with a three-assist performance, while Allie Lewis recorded her first multi-point game of her collegiate career.

In net, Tara Hoverstad (So., Coon Rapids, Minn.) was awarded the win after making nine saves in 53:21 of play.  Hamline goaltender Sam Stark suffered the loss in a 42-save effort.

For the game, Gustavus led 48-11 in shots on goal.  Of those 48 shots, seven came on four power plays, compared to no shots on just one power play chance for the Pipers.

These two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as the series will conclude in St. Peter.  Tomorrow’s game is set for a 2:00 p.m., start at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
