St. Peter, Minn. – The Gustavus women’s soccer team is set to host the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday, Sept. 28th in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match that will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Saturday marks the second annual “Kicking For A Cause” match, which will benefit YUWA, a nationally-based non-profit organization reaching out to girls in rural India, specifically Jharkland. Through team sports, Yuwa provides a platform for young women to gain confidence and make a change in their world.
The Gusties will look to build off of a 1-0 win over Crown College on Wednesday, Sept. 25th. Gustavus outshot the Storm 34-1 on the way to its fourth win of the season. Meanwhile, No. 21 Saint Benedict has yet to lose in the 2013 season. After tying 2-2 in the season opener against UW-Whitewater, the Blazers have rattled off five straight wins, the latest of which was a 1-0 win over St. Olaf. For the season, Gustavus posts a record of 4-3-0 (0-2-0 MIAC), while Saint Benedict has a record of 6-0-1 (2-0-0 MIAC).
Notes
Giving Back… Saturday’s match will also serve as a fundraiser for YUWA. Fans are invited to give voluntary “admission” gifts as well as any other donations throughout the day. There will also be a raffle for a signed Gustavus women’s soccer practice jersey. As a part of the YUWA fundraiser, the St. Peter girl’s 12-and-under soccer team will be honorary ball girls for the match. At halftime, the young Saints will play an inter-squad scrimmage to showcase their talents. Following the game, there will be a post-match gathering at Lone Star BBQ and Grill on third street with a silent auction. All proceeds will benefit YUWA.
