2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Tournament Field Announced

13M3_TEN_GEN_VPIndianapolis – The NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Committee has selected the field of teams that will compete for the 2013 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship.  The Gustavus Adolphus men’s tennis team is one of 44 participants in this year’s tournament, receiving the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s automatic berth after winning the MIAC Playoff Championship last Saturday in St. Peter.

The teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the first, second and third rounds played at regional sites, May 10-12. Kalamazoo College will host the team championships finals, which will be held May 20-22 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Student-athletes selected to the individual championships will be announced Wednesday, May 8.

The championships provide for a 44-team tournament. Automatic qualification (AQ) is granted to 30 conference champions, which form “Pool A.” Seven teams are selected from true independents and schools from conferences that do not have an automatic bid for their champions (Pool B). The remaining seven teams are selected from those teams in conferences with automatic bids that did not win their conference’s AQ and the remaining Pool B institutions (Pool C). The teams are geographically paired, whenever possible.

At 22-9 overall, Gustavus will compete in the Whitewater, Wis. region next weekend with UW-Whitewater serving as the host institution.  Gustavus and UW-Whitewater will be joined at the regional by Trinity University, Ohio Northern, and Concordia University (Wis.).  The Gusties will face the Warhawks at 12:00 p.m.on Saturday, May 11 at Wangerin Courts.  The winner will play the next day, also at noon, in a third-round contest.

The Gusties are making their 26th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.  They have compiled a record of 45-30 in the tournament within that time.
