A blend of current and former Gustavus tennis players made their mark at the recent 2008 Boston Scientific Aquatennial Plaza Tennis Classic by claiming men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles titles. The first title was won by the #2-seed duo of Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach, who defeated Rajasree Hawk and Amy Jamieson 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (4) in the women’s doubles final. Krebsbach (North Oaks, Minn.) will be a junior at Gustavus this fall, and is a two-time All-American in doubles. Hom, a 2007 graduate, was a four-time All-American in doubles while at Gustavus.

Later, Gustavus alumnus and current men’s tennis assistant coach Kevin Whipple and partner John Schollmeier defeated defending champions Nate McLain and Aleksey Zharinov to capture the men’s doubles title by the score of 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10). A 2003 graduate and two-time doubles All-American, Whipple was a member of the 2003 NCAA Division III Men’s Doubles Championship tandem, when he partnered with current ATP player Eric Butorac.

The Gustie duo Andy Bryan and Lauren Hom completed the doubles sweep by defeating Ryan Dussault and Abby Buxton 6-2, 6-2 in the mixed doubles final. Bryan, who graduated in 2008, was a two-time All-American in doubles, and recently was runner-up in doubles at the 2008 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships. Dussault, a 1999 alumnus, was also a two-time All-American while at Gustavus.

Participants played at One Financial Plaza in downtown Minneapolis during the 150th Annual Minneapolis Aquatennial Celebration.
