The Gustavus men advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament for the ninth consecutive year with a 5-0 win over the University of Texas at Tyler on Sunday afternoon at the Brown Tennis Courts on the Gustavus Adolphus College campus. The Gusties, who won their 12th consecutive match improve to 29-5 on the season.
Gustavus set the tone for the match by winning all three doubles matches. Andy Bryan and Charlie Paukert defeated David Ashlock and Dustin Phillips 8-3 at the #1 position to claim the first point and then Ben Tomasek and Nick Hansen defeated Nick Kreines and Jordan Repsher 8-5 at the #3 position to extend the lead to 2-0. The third point would come a bit later as John Kauss and Mike Burdakin had to a little extra time to slip past Steven Campbell and Robert Sajovich 9-7 at the #2 position.
In singles play, John Kauss defeated Robert Sajovich 6-0, 6-3 at the #2 position to make the score 4-0 and then Kevin Stickney recorded the decisive fifth point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Nick Kreines at the #6 position. The Gusties were leading at the #3 and #5 positions and trailing at #1 and #4 positions when the match was stopped.
The Gusties will face an undetermined opponent in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, May 13 at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
