The Gustavus baseball team was swept in MIAC play for the first time this season losing twice at St. Olaf by the scores of 1-8 and 5-6. It looked like the Gusties were going to gain a split in the doubleheader leading 5-3 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, however the Oles staged a dramatic rally scoring three times to hand Gustavus a bitter 6-5 defeat in the second game. The Gusties are now 18-11 overall and 10-3 in MIAC play.
In game one, the Gusties took a 1-0 lead when Tory Herman drove in Andrew Woitas with a sacrifice fly. Unfortunately, for Gustavus that would be the only run in the game, while St. Olaf broke loose for four runs in the bottom of the second, two in the fourth, and two in the sixth to claim the 8-1 victory. Brandon Knoll suffered the loss on the mound. Knoll allowed six hits and four earned runs in two innings of work. Andrew Hoffer and Ryan Michaelis also pitched for the Gusties. Andrew Woitas led the team at the plate as he was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In game two, Gustavus jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to a three-run home run by Spencer Campion. The Gusties scored their fourth run when Robby Wiens singled to score Shea Roehrkasse. Gustavus extended its lead to 5-0 with a run in the top of the second inning. Saint Olaf scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 5-3. In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Oles got singles from their first two batters and Gustavus head coach Mike Carroll substituted Charlie Cicalello for Cory Sukalski on the mound. With two outs and bases loaded, St. Olaf got a double from Nick Fuers to score two and then Luke Gagnon singled to right allowing St. Olaf to score the winning run and escape with the 6-5 victory. Mike DesLauriers was the hitting star for Gustavus as he went 4-for-4. Cody Sukalski suffered the loss on the mound for the Gusties.
