The Gustavus women’s hockey team defeated St. Kate’s 9-1 in St. Paul on Friday night. The win extends the Gusties MIAC win streak to 13 games. Eight different players scored for Gustavus.
The Gusties got off to a fast start scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Ingrid Neve opened the scoring at the 6:40 mark and Leah Erickson extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal at 7:28. Goals by Jess Brandanger (17:17) and Katie Deschneau (19:13) gave the Gusties a 4-0 lead after one period. Gustavus out-shot the Wildcats 14-3.
The Gusties continued their scoring binge with four more goals in the second period. Ann Katz scored at 2:25, Laura Stypulkowski at 7:04, Becky Steiner at 8:27 and Josefin Pettersson at 15:52. Gustavus led 8-0 after two periods.
Ingrid Neve closed out the Gustavus scoring with her second goal of the game at 11:49 of the third period. St. Kate’s scored its lone goal at the 12:19 mark. The Gusties out-shot the Wildcats 43-8 in the game.
First year goaltender Kristin Setterstrom recorded four saves in two full periods of play for Gustavus. Kitty Hurley made five saves and allowed one goal in the third period.
The Gusties, who have not lost a conference game since November 22 (4-2 to St. Thomas), will look to extend their league winning streak to 14 games tomorrow afternoon against St. Kate’s in St. Peter.
