Smith-Dennis Concludes Fall Season At 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships

Mobile, Ala. – Gustavus Adophus junior Mya Smith-Dennis (Savage, Minn.) concluded the fall tennis season at the 2012 USTA/ITA National Small College Championships held this weekend at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.  Smith-Dennis, who was crowned the singles champion of the Midwest Regional after defeating Fabricio Moncada of Saint John’s 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, suffered three losses in the NCAA Division III singles tournament this weekend.

In his opening match of the eight-player draw, Smith-Dennis fell to No. 4 seed Andy Hersh of Johns Hopkins by the score of 6-4, 6-2.  On Friday morning, he dropped his second round consolation match to No. 1 seed Adam Putterman of Washington University-St. Louis 6-3, 6-1.  In the seventh place match on Saturday morning, the Smith-Dennis finished the tournament with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to No. 3 seed Oliver Loutsenko of Skidmore.

The USTA/ITA National Small College Championships are comprised of the eight regional champions (and/or at-large selections) from NCAA Divisions II and III, NAIA and Junior/Community Colleges.  The singles and doubles champions at each divisional level will then compete to become the overall “Super Bowl” champions. The “Super Bowl” champions earn wild cards into the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships with the opportunity to win the culminating event held at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
