Baseball Team Plays For First Time In Two Weeks, Picks Up Important Sweep Over Saint John’s

The Gustavus baseball team, which has not been able to play since returning from Arizona on March 27, combined timely hitting with solid pitching to sweep Saint John’s in Collegeville by the scores of 3-1 and 7-1. Dave Wold and Cody Sukalski recorded complete game pitching victories, while Shea Roehrkasse led the offense going 4-for-7 at the plate with a home run and 3 RBI. The Gusties are now 10-8 overall.

The Gusties got off to a fast start in game one, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Tyler Kaus opened the game with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Pat Siering drove Kaus home with a single and then Shea Roehrkasse homered to give the Gusties a 3-0 lead. Starting pitcher Dave Wold tossed a gem for Gustavus scattering seven hits over seven innings with the only run coming on a home run in the bottom of the fifth inning. Wold struck out eight and walked only one batter. Roehrkasse, who had the big blow in the first inning, went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Tyler Kaus went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Robby Wiens also picked up two hits in the game for the Gusties.

In the second game, the Gusties once again got off to a quick start scoring three times in the top of the first inning. Mike DesLauriers scored the first run on a Johnnie throwing error, but then Shea Roehrkasse drove in Pat Siering with a single, before Andrew Woitas walked with the bases loaded forcing in Chad Eul. Cody Sukalski started the game on the mound for Gustavus and allowed his only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on three consecutive singles. Sukalski shut the Johnnies down the rest of the game allowing only one hit in the final six innings of the contest. The Gusties went on to score once in the third, twice in the fifth, and once in the sixth making the final score 7-1. Eight different players recorded hits for Gustavus. Shea Roehrkasse and Andrew Woitas led the way with two hits each. Robby Wiens went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Defensively, the Gusties committed two errors but also recorded two double plays.

Gustavus is now scheduled to play Bethel at home on Saturday before heading to Moorhead to face Concordia on Sunday.
