Two first half goals propelled the Gustavus men’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Hamline in St. Peter on Saturday. Max Malmquist (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Chris Adams (White Bear Lake, Minn.) gave the Gusties a 2-0 halftime lead that would be enough for the win. Goalkeeper Trevor Brown (Madison, Wis.) posted his third conference shutout of the season for Gustavus to boost his record to 7-0-0.

Gustavus applied pressure on Hamline early in the match outshooting the Pipers 12-1 in the first half, while having a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Coach Zelenz’s team would not get on the board until the 22nd minute when Max Malmquist scored his second goal of the season on a pass from Mike Butterworth (Katy, Tex.). The Gusties’ second goal would come minutes before halftime when Chris Adams (White Bear Lake, Minn.) scored his first collegiate goal. Adams delivered at 41:32 with a diving header on a free kick served by Gabe Joyes (Stoughton, Wis.).

The same style of play continued into the second half as Gustavus held a 12-2 edge in shots during the period. Hamline kept the Gusties off the board until Butterworth scored his ninth goal of the season in the 87th minute with the assist going to Todd Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.). Trevor Brown recorded one save in the match during the first half. Hamline’s Andrew Clement gave up two goals with five saves, while Kevin Hogan gave up one goal with one save. Gustavus improved to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the MIAC, as Hamline drops to 6-4 overall and 3-3 in MIAC play.

Gustavus will play a non-conference match against UW-Whitewater Sunday at 2:00 pm in St. Peter, and return to MIAC action Wednesday at home versus Augsburg at 4:00 pm.
