Jesse Brauer, Andy Bryan Advance to Quarterfinals at NCAA Men’s Tennis Championships in Both Singles and Doubles

Gustavus Adolphus College men’s tennis players Andy Bryan (Jr., Edina, Minn.) and Jesse Brauer (Sr., Mankato, Minn./West) each won two singles matches and paired to win a doubles match to advance to the quarterfinals of both the singles and doubles draws at the 2007 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championships at the Dwight Davis Tennis Complex in St. Louis, Mo. Quarterfinals in both draws and semifinals in singles will be contested Saturday.

Bryan, rated fifth nationally, opened the day with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ben Staley of California Lutheran University before defeating Payum Payman of Wheaton (Mass.) 6-2, 7-5 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Bryan will face Evan Webeler of DePauw University in a Saturday morning quarterfinal (9 a.m.).

Brauer, rated 11th nationally, needed three sets in his opening match against Jeff Jablonski of Pomona-Pitzer but eventually prevailed 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. In the second round, Brauer defeated John James of the University of Mary Washington 6-4, 6-1. Brauer will face Bryan Pybas of UC-Santa Cruz in a Saturday morning quarterfinal (9 a.m.).

Bryan and Brauer then teamed up to defeat Michael Klimchak and Roger Mosteller of The College of New Jersey 6-2, 6-3 to advance to Saturday afternoon’s doubles quarterfinals against Bryan Pybas and Max Liberty-Point of UC-Santa Cruz.

With their victories in both singles and doubles Friday, Brauer and Bryan earned ITA All-America honors. Brauer had previously earned All-America honors this season in singles by winning the ITA Midwest Region Singles Championship last September.
