The Gustavus women’s tennis team will face Amherst College in a NCAA Division III Team Championship quarterfinal match at 8:30 am (CDT) on Tuesday morning. The three-day team championship finals are taking place at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The Gusties enter the match with a record of 26-5, while Amherst enters with a mark of 16-4.
Gustavus advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 5-0 win over Coe College in the second round and a 5-1 win over Carthage College in the third round. Both matches were played on May 5 and 6 at the Swanson Tennis Center and Brown Courts on the Gustavus campus. Amherst advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 5-0 win over St. Lawrence in the second round and a 5-0 win over the College of New Jersey. Both matches were played at Amherst College on May 5 and 6. The winner of the Gustavus/Amherst match will play the winner of the Denison/Sewanee match on Wednesday at 8:00 am (CDT) in one of two national semifinal matches.
Gustavus is making its 11th consecutive appearance in the quarterfinals and 18th appearance in the quarterfinals in the past 19 years. Amherst made its first appearance in the quarterfinals in 1995 and the Lord Jeffs have appeared in the quarterfinals every year since (13 consecutive years). Gustavus and Amherst have split their two previous meetings in the NCAA Tournament with the Lord Jeffs defeating the Gusties 5-2 in the first round in 1996, while Gustavus knocked off Amherst in the third place match 5-4 in 1998.
