The Gustavus women’s tennis team posted it most impressive win of the season with a 6-3 win over #1 Emory in San Antonio, Texas on Sunday afternoon. The Gusties, who are ranked #12 nationally, won all three doubles matches and then claimed three of the six singles matches to post the important victory.
Coach Jon Carlson’s squad opened the match with Jenni White and Darcy Haubrick defeating Kirsten Hillock and Jenny Moscato at #3 doubles by the score of 8-4. Jaime Gaard and Hannah Frericks followed up an 8-6 win at the #2 position over Tshema Nash and Allison Fick. The Gusties closed out doubles play with an exciting win at the #1 position where Lauren Hom and Sierra Krebsbach defeated Richellle Marasigan 9-7.
In singles play, the Gusties got a big lift from Lauren Hom who claimed a hard fought win at #1 singles over Richelle Marasigan by the score of 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Emory got back in to the match with wins at #2 and #3 singles where Tshema Nash defeated the Gusties Jamie Gaard 6-3, 6-1 and Sabra Rogers defeated Jenni White 6-1, 6-1. Gustavus scored the decisive fifth point when Sierra Krebsbach defeated Kirsten Hillock 6-4, 6-2. The Gusties picked up a sixth point when Hannah Frericks defeated Allison Fick 6-4, 6-0 at the #5 position. Emory closed out the match with Jenny Moscato defeating Gustavus’ Darcy Haubrick 6-1, 6-4.
The Gusties snapped a string of seven consecutive losses to Emory dating back to the 2000 season.
Gustavus (11-4) will play Incarnate Word on Monday morning at 10:00 am and then wrap up its spring break trip to San Antonio with a match against #5 Trinity University on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
