The Gustavus women’s soccer team suffered a tough defeat on Sunday afternoon in Santa Cruz, Calif., losing 3-0 to Chapman University. The Gusties continued to struggle on offense, producing six shots compared to Chapman’s 28.
Chapman struck early at the 4:27 mark of the first half with an unassisted goal by Val Sobol from 25 yards out that went into the top of the net over the head of goalkeeper Jessica Richert. The Gustie defense kept the deficit to one goal at the half, but the Panthers struck early to start the second period with their second unassisted goal, this time by Olivia Do 2:17 into the half. Aimee Evans finished off the scoring with yet another unassisted goal at the 53:56 mark.
Richert collected 10 saves throughout the match in her fourth complete-game in the nets this season.
Gustavus drops to 0-4 on the season and will begin conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn. Kickoff is slated for 4:00 p.m. The Gusties lost to the Oles last season 5-2 in St. Peter, Minn. and are 1-6-2 in their last nine meetings.
