The Gustavus women’s hockey team shutout St. Mary’s 4-0 on Don Roberts Ice Rink to claim its sixth consecutive win. Kelly Crandall (Sr., Plymouth, Minn.) led the Gusties with three goals and Stefanie Ubl (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) recorded her third goal of the season. Gustavus improves 6-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Cardinals fall to 2-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the MIAC.
Gustavus controlled most of the play and held an 12-4 advantage in shots during the first period but held only a 1-0 lead. The lone scoring play came at the 12:51 mark with Gustavus on the power play when Christine Wicker (So., Burnsville, Minn.) shot the puck from the red dot to the left of Cardinal goaltender Nikki Jung. Wicker’s shot deflected off Crandall and past Jung for a goal. Crandall was credited with the goal on the play.
Crandall added two goals in the second period as the Gusties pulled out to a 3-0 lead. At the 13:07 mark, Crandall used her momentum to push the puck past Jung for a 2-0 lead. Almost four minutes later, Danny Blacker (Jr., Chisholm, Minn.) controlled the puck while on a 2-on-1 rush and shot the puck from Jung’s left. Jung made the initial save, but Crandall found the rebound and shoved it into the back of the net to complete her hat trick.
Gustavus found the net one last time in the third period to take a 4-0 lead. Ubl shot the puck from the slot and kept it low to find the back of the net at the 6:19 mark. The Cardinals were successful in killing a Gustavus 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute in the period. In fact, St. Mary’s held the Gusties to one power play goal in six opportunities, while they themselves were blanked at 0-for-4 in the game.
Kitty Hurley (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.) played the first two periods for Gustavus and made seven saves. The victory moves her record to 2-1-0 on the season. Breanna Scavo (Fy., Blaine, Minn.) played the third period in goal for the Gusties and stopped four shots. Jung made 52 saves in net for the Cardinals while falling to 0-3-1 on the season.
Gustavus will travel to Winona on Saturday to face St. Mary’s at 2 p.m. The Gusties will host UW-River Falls on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before taking a month long break from their schedule.
