The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team allowed a hat trick to Hamline’s Melanie Leveille, but got a goal from Jenny Pusch (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) in overtime to post a 4-3 victory over the Pipers and move to 5-1-0 overall and 4-0-0 in the MIAC.
The Gusties took a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Stefanie Ubl (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) and Mari Gunderson (So., Shoreview, Minn.) and held the two-goal advantage through a scoreless second period. The Pipers got on the board on Leveille’s first goal just 2:04 into the third period, cutting the lead to 2-1. Jessica Doig (So., New Prague, Minn.) extended the Gustavus lead back to two goals at the 9:59 mark of the period with a goal off an assist from Andrea Peterson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). Leveille responded 35 seconds later with her second goal of the night and added her third with only 1:07 to play to force the extra session. Pusch scored the game-winner 3:26 in to overtime off assists from Margaret Dorer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Peterson.
Doig and Christine Wicker (So., Burnsville, Minn.) also recorded assists on Gunderson’s goal. Ubl’s goal was unassisted.
Sarah Windhorst (Fy., Eden Prairie, Minn.) made 21 saves to pick up the win in net for the Gusties, who outshot the Pipers 51-24. Windhorst improved to 2-0-0 on the season. Crystal Testolin stopped 47 Gustavus offerings, but was pegged with the loss.
With two assists, Andrea Peterson upped her career point total to 155 on 70 goals and 85 assists. Peterson now sits alone in second place on the MIAC’s all-time scoring chart, passing Tomery Stolz of St. Thomas (76-78–154; 2000-03) and Missy Westergren (80-74–154; 1997-2001). Sarah Moe is the MIAC’s current scoring leader. Moe compiled 181 points on 99 goals and 82 assists while playing for Gustavus and Augsburg from 1998-2002.
Peterson also passed Alysia Park of RIT for fifth place on the NCAA Division III women’s hockey career points list. Park finished with 153 points on 79 goals and 74 assists from 2002-2005.
The Gusties will face Saint Mary’s in a home-and-home series next weekend.
