The Gustavus Adolphus women’s hockey team scored a pair of third-period goals to post a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Concordia-Moorhead Friday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter. It was the MIAC opener for both schools.

Concordia lit the lamp first as Kayla Thorson scored a power-play goal at the 16:24 mark of the first period. Thorson skated into the Cobber offensive zone and weaved her way through traffic before slipping the puck past the foot of a sprawling Kitty Hurley (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn.). It was Thorson’s third goal of the season.

The Cobbers extended their lead to 2-0 four minutes into the second period as Thorson emerged from the puck following a battle at the Gustavus blue line and skated in toward Hurley before taking a shot. Hurley deflected Thorson’s attempt, but was unable to recover and stop the rebound shot by Bre Bian, who scored her first goal of the season to go with five assists.

The Gusties cut the lead to 2-1 less than three minutes later as Margaret Dorer (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) notched her team-leading fourth goal of the season following a scramble in front of Cobber goalie Amber Malcolm. Mari Gunderson (So., Shoreview, Minn.) and Danny Blacker (Jr., Chisholm, Minn.) were credited with assists.

Gustavus got the equalizer just 2:14 into the third period as Andrea Peterson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) fired a puck past Malcolm. Gunderson and Christine Wicker (So., Burnsville, Minn.) notched assists on the play.

The game-winner came less than three minutes later for the Gusties as Stefanie Ubl (Jr., Blaine, Minn.) redirected an attempt by Melissa Mackley (Fy., Burnsville, Minn.) into the net to the left of Malcolm. It was Ubl’s first goal of the season.

The Gusties outshot the Cobbers 52-18, including 16-2 on the power play. Each team was whistled for six penalties.

Hurley made 11 saves in two periods of action, while Amanda Rosequist (So., Edina, Minn.) picked up the win with five saves in the third period. Rosequist is now 9-0-0 in her career. Malcolm made 49 saves for the Cobbers but was stuck with the loss.

Gustavus (2-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) will host the Cobbers (1-1-1, 0-1-0 MIAC) again on Saturday afternoon.
