The Gustavus men’s golf team begins play in the NCAA Championships on Tuesday, May 10 at Grandover Resort in Greensboro, North Carolina.  The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday.  The Gusties, who received an at-large bid to the championship, will be making their 18th appearance in the national meet, but the first since 2008.

The Gusties made a strong statement to the NCAA Championships committee for an at-large berth by winning the Saint John’s Invitational in their final appearance of the regular season and knocking off the #2 Johnnies for the second time this year.  Gustavus, which is comprised of three freshmen and two sophomores, has put together an impressive spring campaign winning a dual with St. Thomas, and finishing first at the 16-team Johnnie Invite and second at the 16-team Bobby Krig Invite.  Coach Scott Moe’s squad is currently rated #14 in the most recent GCAA Coaches poll and #6 in the GolfStat.com head-to-head Division III statistics.  The team also ranks #1 in Division III in freshmen scoring with the trio of Simon Erlandsson (Mjolby, Sweden), Tyler McMorrow (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and Andrew Oakes (Hermantown, Minn.) combining for an average of 75.74 this season. Rounding out the squad is a pair of super sophomores in Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.) and Trevor Gervais (Fergus Falls, Minn.)  Kolquist enters the tournament with a spring season stroke average of 73.75, while Gervais has posted an average of 74.13.
