Gustavus Adolphus College Men’s Soccer Coach Larry Zelenz has been named Coach of the Year by the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) men’s soccer coaches.
Zelenz directed the Gusties to a league mark of 6-1-3, which was good for second place in the regular season standings. Gustavus went on to win the first ever MIAC Playoff Championship and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. In the national tournament, Coach Zelenz’s squad won a first round game over Wartburg College (0-0 tie, win 2-0 in a shootout) and then lost a second round game to the University of Redlands (0-0 tie, lost 4-3 in a shootout).
Zelenz directed the Gusties to an overall mark of 16-1-5 and his squad set a school record for most shutouts in a season with 17 in 22 games. Gustavus ended the season with a 16-match unbeaten string (11 wins and five ties). This is the third time Zelenz has been honored as MIAC Coach of the Year (1993, 2000, 2003).
