Men’s Soccer Defeats Central 2-0, Extends Win Streak to Six

The Gustavus men’s soccer team used two first half goals by senior forward Matt Broin to defeat Central College 2-0 in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon. The Gusties won their sixth consecutive match and improved their overall record to 11-1-1. Tyler Garry recorded the shutout in the nets for Gustavus.

The Gustavus men’s soccer team used two first half goals by senior forward Matt Broin to defeat Central College 2-0 in St. Peter on Saturday afternoon. Tyler Garry recorded the shutout in the nets for Gustavus. The Gusties won their sixth consecutive match and improved their overall record to 11-1-1, while Central falls to 8-5-2.

The Gusties got off to a fast start in the non-conference match against the Dutch when Matt Broin drove a left-footed ball past Central goalkeeper Adam Chrestman into the lower left hand corner of the net at the 18:04 mark. Junior forward Mike Butterworth was credited with the assist.

Gustavus extended its lead to 2-0 when Broin headed a high arching ball over the outstretched arms of Chrestman and just under the crossbar at the 22:26 mark. Broin’s header came off a long-throw in from Dan Suchy who was credited with the assist.

Neither team could find the net in the second half giving the Gusties the 2-0 victory. Tyler Garry recorded seven saves for Gustavus and posted his eighth shutout of the season. Adam Chrestman made six saves in a losing effort for the Dutch.

Gustavus is now 3-0-0 against Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) teams this season. The Gusties have compiled a mark of 32-8-4 against IIAC teams all-time.

Coach Larry Zelenz’s squad will face Hamline in an important MIAC matchup on Wednesday at 3:30 pm in St. Paul. Gustavus is currently in first place in the MIAC with a mark of 6-1-0, while Hamline is in second place with a record of (5-0-1). Hamline’s record does not include Saturday’s important match against third place St. John’s.
