The Gustavus volleyball team dropped two matches on the second day of the Border Battle Tournament hosted by Coe College In Cedar Rapids, IA. The Gusties lost to Simpson 3-2 on Saturday morning and then fell to the University of Dubuque 3-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Gustavus dropped a very close match to Simpson by the scores of 21-30, 30-27, 32-30, 18-30, 6-15. Three players recorded double digit kills including Andrea Kron, and Jessica Plemel with 14 kills each, and Jessica Thelemann with 10. Bridget Burtzel recorded 42 set assists, and Andrea Smilanich contributed 25 digs.
Against Dubuque, the Gusties were unable to post a win in any of the three games falling by the scores of 23-30, 29-31, 26-30. Andrea Kron and Jen Thelemann each recorded 14 kills, while Emily Klein recorded 29 digs.
The Gusties finished seventh out of eight teams at the tournament with a record of 1-3. Host Coe finished first with a perfect 4-0 mark. Gustavus is now 15-6 overall on the season.
Bridget Burtzel was named to the All-Tournament team for the Gusties.
Gustavus will face St. Thomas in St. Paul on Wednesday, Oct. 11 in an important MIAC matchup.
