Women’s Tennis Defeats UW-Whitewater 7-2, Augustana 7-2

The Gustavus women’s tennis team defeated UW-Whitewater 7-2 and Augustana 7-2 on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn. The Gusties improve to 6-4 overall with the wins, while UW-Whitewater drops to 12-2 and Augustana falls to 8-2.

Fresh off competing in the ITA Indoors last weekend, it was back to work for the Gustavus women’s tennis team on Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.  The Gusties were able to come away with a pair of 7-2 victories on the day, first defeating UW-Whitewater in the morning, then taking down Augustana (S.D.) later in the evening.  The Gustavus women’s tennis team improves to 6-4 overall with the wins, while UW-Whitewater drops to 12-2 and Augustana falls to 8-2.

In the morning match with UW-Whitewater, the Gusties swept the doubles competition before picking up wins in singles from Sam Frank, Megan Gaard, Marianne Barau, and Alex Erickson.  Barau and Erickson were both locked in a battle in their matches, as Barau defeated Annie Smith 7-5, 7-6 (7-3), and Erickson topped Sydney Divelbiss in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (13-11).

Gustavus picked up three points from doubles in the match with Augie as well.  Gaard, Erickson, Mary Roop, and Megan Born recorded wins in singles to give the Gusties its second 7-2 victory of the day.

The Gustavus women’s tennis team will be back on the court Saturday, March 19, when it will take on St. Cloud State at 9:00 a.m. and Saint Mary’s at 2:00 p.m.  Both matches will take place in the Swanson Tennis Center in St. Peter, Minn.
