The Gustavus volleyball team improved to 4-1 on the season with an impressive 3-0 non-conference win (30-18, 30-24, 30-16) over Northwestern College in Roseville on Wednesday night. Junior Jennifer Thelemann (LeSueur, Minn.) led the attack with 18 kills, while Bridget Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn.) contributed 34 set assists and 16 digs.
Coach Kari Eckheart’s squad played well both defensively and on the attack. The team recorded 69 digs and 9 total team blocks. Burtzel led the way with 16 digs, while Emily Klein (Red Wing, Minn.) contributed 15. Thelemann led the team in blocking with 1 block solo and 4 block assists. Danielle Gimmestad (Marshall, Minn.) added 3 block assists. On the attack, Thelemann led the team with 18 kills, followed by Andrea Kron (Cold Spring, Minn.) with 10 and Jessica Plemel (Owatonna, Minn.) with 9. As a team, the Gusties recorded 52 kills in 126 attempts with 17 errors for a .278 attack percentage.
Gustavus will play four matches at the Sugarloaf Classic hosted by St. Mary’s University in Winona, Minn. this Friday and Saturday. The Gusties open against Luther at 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon.
