The second-ranked St. Norbert Green Knights men’s hockey team claimed a 3-2 win in a tight game against Gustavus Adolphus on November 21 in Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties held the lead in the second period until St. Norbert came back to tie 2-2.
Gustavus opened the scoring two minutes into the first period with a goal by Tom Awaijane and an assist by Brandon Buskowiak. The Gustavus goaltender, Dan Melde, remained strong in the goal saving all 14 shots on goal in the period.
The second goal came from the Gusties when they were down one man twelve seconds into the second period when Joe Ulwelling scored on an assist by Loren Havemeier. Less than twenty seconds later, the Green Knights fought back to score their first goal of the game by Jason Deitsch. The goal that tied the game 2-2 came three minutes later by Kelly Wosnack.
The game remained tied until there were six minutes left in the third period and the Green Knights took the game with a goal by Andy Trann. The final seconds were intense, as the Gusties attempted to tie the game by pulling Melde with 48 seconds left on the clock.
Gustavus’s defense held strong throughout the game protecting 37 of the 40 shots on goal. St. Norbert’s goalie, Chancy Colquhoun, was also strong saving 24 of the 22 shots on goal. With the loss, Gustavus falls to 2-3. St. Norbert rises to 7-0-1.
Gustavus returns to action on Saturday, November 22 by hosting non-conference foe, Lake Forest at 7:05 pm.
