Women’s Tennis Compiles 5-1 Record Over Weekend

In its last action before Spring Break, the Gustavus women’s tennis team forged a 5-1 dual record last weekend, defeating Southwest Minnesota State (8-1), Saint Mary’s (9-0), Nebraska-Omaha (8-1), Augustana (S.D.) (9-0) and Concordia (6-0), while falling to Division I Drake University (6-1).

Jenny Arnfelt (So., Arden Hills, Minn.) went 7-0 in matches over the weekend, while Alex Burleigh (So., Verona, Wis.) and Laura Arnebeck (Fy., Hibbing, Minn.) was 6-0. Hannah Frericks (Jr., Sartell, Minn.) and Darcy Haubrick (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) each added five wins.

The Gusties opened the weekend with a 8-1 win over Southwest Minnesota State Friday night. Burleigh, Arnfelt, Arnebeck, Jill Bailey (Jr., Belle Plaine, Minn.) and Christine Reimer (Fy., Foley, Minn.) each picked up a win in singles and doubles play, while Pieper Brunsvold (So., Edina, Minn.) teamed with Reimer to add a win at #3 doubles.

Gustavus split its team Saturday, sending part to Des Moines to face Drake and Nebraska-Omaha, while keeping part at home for duals with Saint Mary’s and Augustana (S.D.). The Des Moines contingent picked up a split, falling to Drake before downing Nebraska-Omaha for the third time this season. Gustavus was swept in singles by the Bulldogs, but captured the doubles point with wins at #1 doubles by Tara Houlihan (Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Lyndsey Palen (Sr., Rochester, Minn.) and #2 doubles by Lauren Hom (Jr., Stevens Point, Wis.) and Marla Menne (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). Hom, Houlihan, Palen, Menne and Jenni White (So., Cedar Rapids, Iowa) each picked up a pair of wins over UNO, while Jaime Gaard (Jr., Edina, Minn.) teamed with White for a win at #3 doubles before falling at #3 singles.

The group that remained in St. Peter posted a pair of shutouts over MIAC rival Saint Mary’s and Division II Augustana (S.D.). Burleigh, Arnfelt, Arnebeck, Frericks and Haubrick each posted 4-0 records Saturday, while Bailey and Erica Dobson (Fy., Vadnais Heights, Minn.) each finished 2-0 after splitting time at #6 singles and #3 doubles.

The Gusties wrapped up the weekend with a 6-0 win over Concordia at St. Cloud. Hom, Gaard, Frericks, White, Haubrick, Arnfelt each picked up singles wins. No doubles matches were contested.
