Women’s Soccer Tops St. Catherine 1-0

The Gustavus women’s soccer team got its first MIAC victory of the season by defeating St. Catherine 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. Gustavus’s Liz Underwood scored the game-winning goal off an Ashley Anderson assist in the 42nd minute of the match.

The Gustavus women’s soccer team got its first MIAC victory of the season by defeating St. Catherine 1-0 on Saturday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn.  Gustavus’s Liz Underwood scored the game-winning goal off an Ashley Anderson assist in the 42nd minute of the match.  Goalkeeper Chelsea Bayer was credited with the shutout win, her fourth of the season, making three saves in the match.

With the victory, Gustavus improves to 5-7 overall and 1-5 in the MIAC, while St. Catherine falls to 6-5-1 overall and 2-4 in the MIAC.

The Gusties fired six shots at goalkeeper Chelsea Jones-Thomas before the Underwood goal in the opening half.  The Wildcats had five shots in the first half, as Bayer made two saves.

St. Catherine turned its play around in the second half, recording seven shots within the frame.  Bayer made just one save in the period as only one Wildcat shot was on target.  The Gusties had just two shots in the period.

Jones-Thomas suffered the loss in nets for the Wildcats, making five saves in a complete game.  Niether team gained an advantage in corner kicks (6-6), yet St. Catherine had the advantage in shots 12-to-9.  Underwood, Anderson, and Kwapick all registered two shots in the match to lead the Gusties.

“They are who we thought they were and we didn’t let them off the hook,” said Head Coach Mike Stehlik.

The Gustavus women’s soccer team will be back in action tomorrow as it will take on non-conference opponent Loras College at 12:00pm on the Gustie Soccer Field in St. Peter.
