Women’s Hockey Remains Undefeated in MIAC Play with 3-1 Win at Hamline

The Gustavus women’s hockey team recorded a 3-1 win over Hamline at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn. on Thursday evening. All three Gustie goals were scored on the power play. Kelly Crandall led Gustavus in scoring with one goal and one assist for two points.

The Gustavus women’s hockey team remained unbeaten in league play with a 3-1 win over Hamline at Drake Arena in St. Paul, Minn. on Thursday night. The Gusties had a big night on the power play scoring three goals in six chances. The two teams will play the second game of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 pm at Don Roberts Ice Rink on the Gustavus campus.

The Gusties took a 1-0 lead on a Kelly Crandall goal at 17:20 of the first period. Margaret Dorer and Andrea Peterson were credited with assists. Gustavus, which outshot the Pipers 13-1 in the first period, took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first 20 minutes.

Hamline evened the score at 1-1 on a goal by Sara Mickelson midway through the second period (10:20). Mindy Lein was credited with an asssist on Mickelson’s goal. Gustavus re-claimed the lead just three minutes later when Margaret Dorer scored at the 13:21 mark with an assist from Kelly Crandall. The Gusties held the 2-1 lead through two periods. Gustavus outshot Hamline 13-2 in the second period.

Gustavus tallied an insurance goal early in the third period extending its lead to 3-1. Ingrid Neve scored the power play goal at the 3:31 mark. It was an unassisted goal. The Gusties held the advantage in shots once again outshooting Hamline 13-6 in the period. Gustavus held a 39-9 advantage in shots in the game.

Kitty Hurley picked up the win in the nets for Gustavus as she turned away eight shots and allowed one goal. Hurley is now 4-1-0 on the season with a 1.28 goals against average. Rachael Young suffered the loss in the nets for Hamline. Young recorded 36 saves and allowed three goals.

The Gusties improve to 7-1-0 overall and 5-0 in the MIAC, while Hamline falls to 2-5-3 overall and 1-3-1 in the MIAC.
