Gymnastics Concludes Season With Seventh Place Finish At 2010 WIAC Championship

The Gustavus gymnastics team registered 175.275 points to finish in seventh place at the 2010 WIAC Gymnastics Championship held Sunday afternoon on Gus Young Court in St. Peter, Minn.  UW-Whitewater took home the 2010 WIAC Championship crown with 185.475 points.  UW-La Crosse placed second (183.775), while Winona State University rounded out the top three in third (183.600).

The Gusties tallied individual event scores of 45.450 on the vault, 41.575 on the uneven parallel bars, 42.300 on the balance beam, and 45.950 on the floor exercise.

Kelly Mathewson had the top Gustavus finish of the day by taking seventh place on the bars with a mark of 9.100, which matched her season best in the event.  UW-Whitewater’s Justine Weyer won the bars with a score of 9.650.  Shelby Winzent finished 17th with a score of 8.800, also a season best for her.

Christina Sorensen also scored a season best with a mark of 8.850 on the beam (26th place).  UW-Eau Claire’s Danielle Schulzetenberg scored a 9.725 to become the balance beam champion.

Danielle Thibodeau placed 13th on the floor (9.450), as Mathewson finished behind her in 16th (9.375).  UW-Stout’s Naomi DeLara won the floor with a score of 9.675.

Thibodeau also added a 17th place finish on the vault with a mark of 9.250.  Gabi Hooper of UW-La Crosse won the vault with a score of 9.625.

UW-Stout’s Meghan Hargens won the all-around competition with a score of 37.875, while Justine Weyer placed second at 37.400, and Winona State’s Heather Rummelein placed third with a 37.150.  Mathewson placed eighth in the all-around (35.775), as Thibodeau took 16th (34.150).

Kelly Mathewson was named to the 2010 WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team at the conclusion of the meet.
