The Gustavus women’s swimming and diving got out to a fast start in the first day of competition at the MIAC Championships, which are being held in the Aquatics Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. The Gusties are currently in first place with 208 points. Carleton is in second place with 142 points, as St. Thomas rounds out the top three in third with 141 points. Saint Benedict (124) and St. Olaf (122) are in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Gustavus senior Carrie Gundersen had the best swim of the day, taking first place in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA A qualifying time of 4:59.02. Gundersen broke the MIAC and meet record time with her performance. Joining her in the top five of the 500 free was Jonna Berry, who placed fifth with a time of 5:10.01.
Carley Mosher made a splash in her first career MIAC Championship individual race, taking first place with an NCAA B qualifying time of 2:09.48. Stephanie Korba finished fifth in the same race with a time of 2:11.87.
Gustavus filled two of the top three spots in 50 freestyle, as Dajana Vidovic and Sarah Hund finished second and third, respectively. Vidovic finished in 24.05, as Hund swam a 24.06. Both times made the NCAA B cut.
The 200 freestyle relay team, consisting of Serena Elthon, Vidovic, Berry, and Hund registered Gustavus’s other victory of the day, taking first place with an NCAA B qualifying time of 1:35.62. Finishing third in the 400 medley relay (3:52.42) was the team of Maggie Hansvick, Mosher, Hund, and Korda. Their time also made the NCAA B cut.
