Men’s Hockey Starts Slow, Finishes Strong In 5-1 Win Over Concordia

The Gustavus men’s hockey team got off to a slow start and trailed 1-0 after the first period, however the Gusties scored three times in the second period and twice in the third period to pull away for a 5-1 win over Concordia at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Friday night.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team got off to a slow start and trailed 1-0 after the first period, however the Gusties scored three times in the second period and twice in the third period to pull away for a 5-1 win over Concordia at Don Roberts Ice Rink on Friday night. Brad Wieck and Ross Ring-Jarvi scored twice to lead the Gusties.  Josh Swartout picked up the win in goal.

Concordia took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Aaron Wheeler with three minutes remaining in the first period.

In the second period, David Martinson (4:35), Ross Ring-Jarvi (8:05) and Brad Wieck (12:37) all scored to give the Gusties some breathing room and a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period, Gustavus extended its lead to 5-1 on goals by Ross Ring-Jarvi (5:38) and Brad Wieck (8:00).  Wieck’s goal was a short-handed goal.

With the win, Gustavus remains in first place in the MIAC with a record of 14-4-2 overall and 8-1-2 in the MIAC.

The Gusties and Cobbers will close out the series on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm in St. Peter.
