The Gustavus women’s soccer team opened Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a 2-0 win over Carleton in St. Peter on Wednesday afternoon. First year players Callie Christensen and Kristy Tupy each tallied their first collegiate goal to lead the Gusties to victory. Goalkeeper Tori Boughton came up with several key saves late in the match to preserve the win.

The Gusties took a 1-0 lead when midfielder Callie Christensen scored 13 minutes into the match. Shannon Quealy was credited with the assist.

Gustavus increased its lead to 2-0 when forward Kristy Tupy found the net at the 38:43 mark. Tami Korb was credited the assist.

Neither team scored in the second half, however Carleton put the pressure on the Gusties late in the game and Gustie goalkeeper Tori Boughton came up with three tremendous saves to keep the Knights off the board. Boughton’s biggest save of the game came at the 80:00 minute mark when she stopped a penalty kick taken by Carleton’s Sophie Wood. Boughton also turned away breakaway opportunities by Clare O’Connor and Nicky Bloom. Boughton finished the match with 11 saves. Carleton used two keepers in the contest. Emily Muirhead started the match allowing both goals and making three saves. Jenna Bernhardson played the second half making five saves.

The Gusties, who improve to 3-2-0 overall will now face Concordia College in Moorhead on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
