The Gustavus women’s hockey team had its 33-game MIAC winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss to St. Thomas at the Tommies rink in Mendota Heights on Saturday night. The Gusties had clinched the MIAC regular season title with a 6-3 win over the Tommies on Friday night. Gustavus, which is now 21-3-1 overall and 17-1-0 in the MIAC, will open MIAC Tournament play next Thursday at 7:00 pm against the winner of Tuesday night’s game between St. Mary’s and Augsburg.
St. Thomas jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Maureen Hardwick’s short-handed goal late in the second period. The Tommies held a 1-0 edge after two periods.
The Gusties tied the score at 1-1 when Kelly Crandall scored for Gustavus at 9:03 of the third period.
The Tommies scored what turned out to be the game-winner with eight minutes remaining in the game.
The Gusties outshot the Tommies 22-18. Gustavus netminder Kara Meyer, who suffered the loss, made 16 saves. St. Thomas’ Katie Jetland, who picked up the win, turned away 21 of the 22 shots she faced.
