The Gustavus women’s hockey team scored two goals in the first two minutes of the third period to claim a come-from-behind 5-4 win over #10 UW-Superior on Tuesday night in Superior, Wisconsin. Abby Randall scored two goals for the Gusties including the gamewinner at 2:12 of the third period.
UW-Superior jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Brittany Arendt at 6:21 of the first period. The Gusties tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Andrea Peterson at 9:43 and then took a 2-1 lead when Becky Steiner scored at the 18:12 mark. Gustavus took its 2-1 lead into the lockerroom at the end of the first period.
The Yellowjackets tied the score at 2-2 when Erin Kegley found the net just two minutes into the second period. The Gusties regained the lead at 3-2 when Abby Randall scored a power-play goal at the 4:26 mark. The see-saw battle continued as UW-Superior tied the game at 3-3 on a goal by Vi Theofylatos at 8:23 and then took a 4-3 lead after a goal by Caitlin Jarrett at the 15:58 mark. The Yellowjackets closed out the second period with a 4-3 lead.
The Gusties came charging out of the lockerroom in the third period and tied the score at 4-4 on a power-play goal by Laura Stypulkowski just :18 seconds after the face-off. Abby Randall tallied what turned out to be the game-winner two minutes later at the 2:22 mark.
First year goaltender Danielle Koopman recorded the win in the nets for the Gusties as she recorded nine saves and allowed one goal in just over 29 minutes of ice time. Kara Meyer played the first 30 minutes of the contest making 10 saves and allowing three goals.
Gustavus outshot UW-Superior 29-23 and scored two power-play goals on eight power-play opportunities. Gustavus is now 14-2-1 overall and 10-0-0 in the MIAC.
The Gusties will return to MIAC action this weekend hosting Concordia in a two-game series. The first game is Friday night at 7:05 pm and the finale is at 2:05 pm on Saturday afternoon.
