Men’s Hockey Sweeps Saint Mary’s

The Gustavus men’s hockey team defeated Saint Mary’s 4-2 to complete the conference series sweep. Mike Hosfield, Adam Meyer, Kyle Menken and Keith Detlefsen were the goal scorers for Gustavus.

The Gustavus men’s hockey team hosted Saint Mary’s on Saturday night in the second game of the conference series. Gustavus completed the sweep of Saint Mary’s with a 4-2 victory in St. Peter. The Gusties improve to 5-3-0 in the MIAC and 8-9-0 overall, while the Cardinals fall to 2-7-1 in the MIAC and 6-12-1 overall.

Gustavus jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal from Mike Hosfield at 2:39 of the first period. Cardinals goaltender Ryne Ness was unable to hang onto a Keith Detlefsen slap shot and Hosfield snagged the rebound and placed the puck into the goal. Saint Mary’s tied the game at one goal apiece when Adam Gill scored at 4:14 of the opening period.

Adam Meyer recorded his seventh goal of the season at 4:57 of the second period to put the Gusties back in the lead. Keith Detlefsen was credited with the assist on Meyer’s goal. Approximatley five minutes later, Kyle Menken scored to make it 3-1 in favor of the Gusties. Reegan Rehm and Adam Meyer assisted on the third goal of the night for Gustavus. Coach Brett Petersen’s squad held a 15-6 shot advantage in the second period and enjoyed a two goal advantage after 40 minutes of play.

In the final period, Saint Mary’s would pull within one goal as Bill Flynn scored at 12:36. Keith Detlefsen added an insurance goal for the Gusties at 18:32 to make the score 4-2 in favor of Gustavus. Detlefsen leads the team in goals with 11 and has scored a goal in seven consecutive games.

Gustie goaltender Erik Kraska turned away 22 shots and improved to 6-1-0 on the season. Cardinal goaltender Ryne Ness made 30 saves in the conference loss.

Gustavus will return to MIAC action next Friday against St. Olaf in Northfield, Minn.
