TUCSON, Ariz. – The Gustavus baseball team Sunday suffered a decisive 16-4, seven-inning loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at the Tucson Invite. The Gusties drop to 1-5 overall while the Stags improve to 15-4.
CMS took advantage of a two-out error in the first inning and followed with six unearned runs on four hits. The Gusties were quick to respond with four runs but that proved to be all the offense on the day for the Black and Gold. Mitch Casperson (Jr., Le Sueur) got a free RBI with a bases-loaded walk. Bryce Novak (Sr., Cleveland) knocked in the next run with a groundout, and Jack Hanson (Sr., Minnetonka) followed with a two-run single.
The Stags answered with a pair of runs on four hits in the second for an 8-4 lead. The game went sideways in the fourth as CMS scored seven more runs on seven hits, including a two-run homer and two-run triple. The Stags added another run in the fifth after a pair of hits.
Novak and Hanson paced the offense with two hits apiece. Adam Biewen (Jr., Golden Valley) was credited with the loss after pitching the first inning. All six runs against Biewen were unearned as he allowed four hits and struck out two. The Gusties used three pitchers in relief, allowing 10 earned runs on 15 hits with four strikeouts.
The Gusties conclude play at the Tucson Invite tomorrow with a doubleheader against Wesleyan.
