Men’s Hockey Drops Home Opener in Overtime

The Gustavus men’s hockey team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Scholastica in its home opener Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink.

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to St. Scholastica in its home opener Saturday night at Don Roberts Ice Rink. The Gusties drop to 0-3-1 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC, while the Saints improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Gustavus took the first lead of the game at the 12:35 mark of the first period as Nick Mountain (Fy., Woodbury) scored his first collegiate goal with the help of Jack Kubitz (Jr., Wayzata) and Joey Gimberlin (So., Mendota Heights). The Gusties maintained the one-goal lead until the 8:53 mark of the second as the Saints netted the equalizer.

Neither team scored in third, setting up the three-on-three overtime where the Saints scored less than a minute in for the victory.

The Saints outshot the Gusties 25-20 as Jackson Hjelle (Jr., Delano) made 23 saves in goal. St. Scholastica went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Gusties went 0-for-2.

Gustavus returns to MIAC play next weekend with a Friday-Saturday series against Bethel. Friday night’s game in Saint Peter starts at 7 p.m.
