SAINT PETER, Minn. — The Saint Benedict Bennies dealt Gustavus a 4-0 setback in Saturday’s MIAC competition at the Gustie Soccer Field.
Both teams battled scoreless in the first half until Emily Cavanaugh opened the scoring for the Bennies, putting in a rebound off of Gustie goalkeeper Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) to take the lead 29 minutes into the first half. The Gusties held the edge in shots through the first 45, with nine shots to Saint Benedict’s four, but wasn’t able to convert on any of their offensive opportunities.
The second half was a different story, as the Bennies took the offensive reigns and did not let up, netting three more goals for a final of 4-0. Lana Krautkremer would add a tally just eight minutes into the second, off of an assist from Alli Voss, who would add her own seventeen minutes later. Caralyn Conners netted the final blow, sailing a shot over the hands of Goodno into the top left corner of the net.
Cambelle Waldspurger (Fy., Mahtomedi) led the Gusties in shots with five while Annika Lewis (Sr., Hudson, Wis.) put two shots on goal for the team lead. Bennie goalkeepers Annie Waters and Paige Kahlmeyer split the shutout, saving three Gustie shots each, while Goodno finished with one save on five shots.
The Gusties are back in action on Sept. 27 when they head to Winona, Minn. to take on the Saint Mary’s Cardinals for another MIAC competition at 6 p.m.
