THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Saturday’s game rang true to one theme for the Gustavus women’s soccer team: déjà vu.
For the second time in as many games, Coach Laura Burnett-Kurie and her team found themselves down by one goal in the second half. And for the second time, the Gusties responded with two goals of their own.
The first goal of the game came off the foot of Anna Evenson, who put one past Gustie goalkeeper Abby Goodno (Sr., Little Canada) just four minutes into the second half.
The Regals wouldn’t hold onto this lead for long, though, as Elin Swenson (So., Uppsala, Sweden) netted the equalizer just one minute after Evenson’s goal. Both teams would play deadlocked at 1-1 for 28 minutes when Cambelle Waldspurger (Fy., Mahtomedi) would break the silence with her second goal of the weekend — and her career.
“Today is the epitome of a team win,” said Burnett-Kurie. “We came out with a great mentality in the first half, kept our shape defensively and created some opportunities. It was our second half performance where we really came into our own. The team made great adjustments, battled in the tough moments and we scored two fantastic goals. Once again, we stayed composed and believed in ourselves which showed with our comeback wins.”
Goodno finished with seven saves in goal for the Gusties, while Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Logan Duford had one save between the pipes for the Regals.
“Our depth, team camaraderie, confidence and belief are special this year. We are excited to continue to grow together.”
The Gusties (2-0 overall) are back in action on Sept. 7 for their home opener, a 4 p.m. showdown against Bethany Lutheran.
