MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Gustavus baseball team dropped game one of a Sunday doubleheader at Concordia by a score of 5-4, while game two was postponed due to inclement weather. Game two will be played at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Saint John’s University in Collegeville.
Concordia took control of the game early by scoring three runs in the first inning on a pair of hits and an error. The Gusties scored their first run in the third as Gavin Baker (Jr., Lakeville) singled to score Bryce Novak (Jr., Cleveland), but the Cobbers wound up getting a double play out of the situation as Baker was tagged out trying to reach second and Jack Hanson (Sr., Minnetonka) was tagged out in a run-down.
Gustavus tied the game in the fourth. Drake Siens (So., Rogers) and Dalton Thelen (Sr., Cold Spring) each singled and scored on a double by Logan Bjorkman (Jr., Lindstrom). The visitors then gained a 4-3 advantage in the sixth as Bjorkman hit a sac fly.
The Cobbers rallied in the seventh with back-to-back singles and an intentional walk to load the bases. The following batter hit a deep fly ball to the right field corner and the runners on both second and third were able to tag and score for the walk-off winner.
Adam Biewen (So., Golden Valley) pitched four innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits with a strikeout. Six different Gusties had one hit apiece with Bjorkman tallying three RBIs.
Monday’s game two make-up will have no bearing on the final MIAC standings as Gustavus (25-12, 12-7 MIAC) has secured the No. 3 seed and Concordia (15-13, 10-9 MIAC) is the No. 4. Playoffs start Thursday at CHS Field in St. Paul with Concordia taking on No. 1 Bethel and the Gusties facing No. 2 Saint John’s.
