TUCSON, Ariz. – The Gustavus baseball team continued its win streak on Sunday in Tucson. With their 10-9 victory over Concordia Wisconsin, the Gusties improve to 9-2 overall.
Looking for redemption after a fluke ball-in the fence situation in yesterday’s game, Drake Siens (So., Rogers) was fifth in the lineup in the first inning and launched a three-run home run for an early 3-0 lead.
Jayce Luna (Jr., Le Sueur) earned the start on the rubber on Sunday and left a Concordia runner on base heading into the second.
In the top of the second, Dalton Thelen (Sr., Cold Spring) added a double before a Bryce Novak (Jr., Cleveland) RBI single. Luna kept the Bulldogs in check, sending them down in order.
Gustavus plated three additional runs in the third before a Concordia pitching change.
The Concordia bullpen continued to fall short as the Gusties added their eighth run and another in the fourth for a dominant 9-0 lead.
Concordia found its stride in the bottom of the fourth, cutting into the deficit with three runs.
The Bulldogs put up a dangerous rally in the fifth eliminating the Gustavus lead with six runs to tie it up at 9-9.
In the top of the six, Siens proved to be the hero for the Gusties hitting a home run in the opposite field for the game winning run.
Both teams had an uneventful seventh inning before ending the game in eight.
The Gusties will face Kalamazoo on Monday.
