SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Gustavus men’s hockey team suffered a 4-1 loss at home on Saturday night against Saint John’s and move to 2-7-1 overall and 0-3-1 in the MIAC.
Gustavus faced defensive setbacks as the Johnnies held a 14-2 shot advantage. With less than five minutes left Saint John’s found the back of the net and added another 20 seconds later for a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Gusties added nine more shots in the second and Saint John’s tacked on their third goal at the 12:43 mark. Gustavus killed off both penalties and gained a power play in the final minute of the middle frame.
Gustavus entered the third period unable to make anything out of a power play opportunity but found momentum at the 6:24 mark when Jack Westlund (Fy., Alexandria) got the Gusties on the board with assists credited to Tyler Ebner (Sr., La Crosse, Wis.) and Nick Klishko (Sr., San Diego). 30 seconds later the Johnnies notched the fourth and final goal.
Jackson Hjelle (So., Delano) made 26 saves in the loss and Jack Suchy (Fy., Medina) had a team high four shots.
The Gusties travel to Concordia Wisconsin for a non-conference game on Saturday for a 2021 closer.
