WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Gustavus men’s basketball team opened its 2021-22 campaign against UW-Whitewater on Friday with a 86-65 loss in a tale of two halves. The team starts the season with an 0-1 overall record.
Gustavus had an excellent first half in large part due to their impressive shooting performance going 17-30 from the field, and 6-11 from behind the arc. The Gusties posted an early 10-4 lead after a Kaleb Fehan (Sr., Waseca) three-pointer ignited scoring from Adam Biewen (So., Golden Valley). The Gusties continued to hold strong throughout the middle portion of the first half and with five minutes left in the first half, Spencer Swanson (Fy., Waconia) made a layup for the Gusties to secure a 14 point advantage. UWW closed the half on a 15-2 run and carried the momentum into the second half as the Gusties were outscored 11-2 in the start of the second frame.
Gustavus battled back and narrowed the deficit to five points at 58-53 with 12:55 remaining after a jumper by Pete Lundquist (Sr., Rochester). However the Warhawks had the upper hand in the paint, outscoring Gustavus by 26. The Gusties were plagued by turnovers limiting their chances of getting back into the game. The Warhawks handed Gustavus a season opening 86-65 loss. Gustvaus was led in scoring by the trio of Biewen with 13 points, and Feahn and Lundquist each posting 11.
The Gusties look to bounce back Saturday at UW-Platteville with a 7:00 tip-off.
